Climate Strike NYC
September 20th, 2019
GSM Kindergarten & 1st Grade at the Climate Strike
GSM’s mission is to raise global citizens that stand up for justice and feel deeply connected to their environment. Our fine educators put together an entire weeks worth of education in honor of the Climate Strike. Our little protesters were headed out with their hand-made signs. Thank you to Melanie Adley for leading this effort and making it your mission to raise young activists.
Climate Awareness Week at GSM
Readers Workshop – students learn about peaceful action and protests with book Peaceful Fights for Equal Rights
Readers Workshop – students learn about different people who demanded change in America and consider what change they can make with book ENOUGH! 20 Protesters who Changed America.
Social Studies (first block) – students watch book about climate change, Is this my Home?, and consider how the whole world is our home. Consider what they can do to keep our home / planet clean and safe (capture ideas of both K and 1 on an anchor chart to be used when making our signs on Thursday)
Writers Workshop – review the ideas we came up with and look at some examples of protest signs. In partnerships, GSM students will paint / write / decorate their protest signs.
Music – Lydia teach a song / chant about the climate for GSM students
12:45 – All grades line up to march to park with their signs
